Last week the children began to write an introduction to this fantasy world however having to focus on using Keynote to type up their work meant the quality of writing was affected slightly. Therefore I wanted to really focus on this today.
Again I used the slow writing technique, which is becoming my favourite way of asking the children to carefully consider and review their writing.
Using the Slow Writing prompt we chose rules for each of our six sentences. Then the children write their six sentences, double spacing their work. Once they have finished they review their writing adding any extra words or changing words to make it more interesting. It really does force the children to reflect on their writing and think about how they write rather than what. Here are the slow writing prompts we used:
Once the children had completed their paragraphs they narrated over some screenshots of the app to create a short video using iMovie.
Once they had exported this is was time to bring their video to life using Augmented Reality!
What is Augmented Reality?
A web definition states “Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality.”
Sounds very technical! However looks amazing! What it does do, is get one heck of a reaction from the children!! They were amazed to see how their word clouds were brought to life with their videos. There is so much potential using Augmented Reality, it is something that I am really excited by as a teacher as a way to engage and encourage the children to be creative.
Using the app Aurasma, the children uploaded their videos as their overlay and used their word clouds from a few lessons before as their trigger image. The way it works is that by hovering the iPad over the trigger image will load the Augmented Reality through the Aurasma app. Here is an example:
