How can we improve our ICT skills while demonstrating our understanding in Numeracy? Class 1A today combined both by using the app ‘Tiny Tap!’
On Friday Class 1Y2 experimented with the app ‘Tiny Tap,’ to make their own games. The tiny tap app is an excellent child friendly app that allows children to make quiz like games from photos, pictures or drawings. The app allows the children to either take a photo using the iPad camera or search the internet or use the in build drawing tool to capture a picture. The children can then record themselves asking a question before circling the correct answer on the picture. Class 1Y2 absolutely loved creating their own games and were able to create questions using all three methods however their focus was quite open and the lesson mainly focused on the development of their ICT skills using the app.
Today in Class 1A I decided to give a more focused approach and link it with Numeracy. I wanted to see how well the children could use their understanding of numbers and particularly the vocabulary that they have covered in class. How many could correctly use “more than,” “less than,” “half,” “double,” “closest to,” “biggest/smallest value,” etc. This app provided the perfect way to do this while developing the children’s speaking and listening and ICT skills.
What the children did? – Most children started by using the in built drawing tool to put write some numbers. From there they asked different questions relating to their numbers, it was great to see the children using vocabulary that they have been using in numeracy lessons. Children were so excited to share and play each others games and so pushed themselves to try and make some really challenging questions. Some children used coins and took a picture to bring in another aspect of maths while others used crayons and other visual aids. Some were even bringing in shape and space by comparing size of objects or even themselves to find out who is the tallest! Here is an example of one of the children’s drawings:
Overall it was an excellent and enjoyable lesson where children were applying skills from numerous areas of the curriculum. The app will be a fantastic tool to use in the future for such things as evaluations of topics, showing understanding of reading books, science/RE quizzes, the possibilities are endless. The best thing about the app is that it free!!! You can download it here and if you do, you can try some of our games here!!!
